Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, responsible for the development, construction and operation of the East-West Metro line of the city of Calcutta, (Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation), has announced it has awarded CAF a contract for the supply of 84 metro cars made up of 14 trains.
These trains are totally air conditioned, with a maximum passenger capacity of 2,136 pax/train. They feature the most advanced and modern technology and can run at up to 90 km/h. These new units are fitted with handicapped persons assistance systems. The Train design takes into consideration the local climatic and operating conditions and the large population density in the Calcuta region.
Calcutta is the third megalopolis, in terms of pupulation, in India, with almost 21 million inhabitants from its metropolitain fringe and historic quarters, and was the first Indian city to inaugurate an underground transport network.
